NBA Social Recap, Week 25: Championship Celebrations and Heartfelt Reflections
The NBA playoffs are right around the corner, but before gearing up for two months of madness, the basketball world had some other business to attend to. There were not one, but two NCAA basketball championships to sort out; a fond (regular season) farewell to a venerable Bay Area arena to commemorate, and a hip-hop Marathon to continue. Here’s the best of what NBA Twitter and Instagram had to offer from Week 25 of the season, starting with No. 5.
5) Kyle Kuzma Teaches Donovan Mitchell About Reading
Kyle Kuzma has proved to be an inquisitive sort since landing in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers. He’s made friends in the fashion world, dabbled in tech investing and, apparently, is an avid supporter of reading. The Flint, Michigan native’s challenge to his Twitter followers to “Read more” drew a snarky response from Donovan Mitchell—which, in turn, earned the Utah Jazz star a lesson in modern reading technology from Kuz himself.
4) Roger Mason Jr. Hangs in for Virginia’s NCAA Win
Like so many hoops heads across the country, Roger Mason Jr. was on the edge of his seat during Monday’s March Madness finale. The difference, of course, is that Roger actually played at the University of Virginia before embarking on a decade playing in the NBA and several years serving as the deputy executive director of the National Basketball Players Association. Fortunately for him, the Cavaliers came out on top, parlaying a trip to overtime into an 85-77 win over Texas Tech in Minneapolis.
3) Brittney Griner Gives It Up for Baylor
A day before the men sorted out their champion, the women crowned their latest NCAA hoops champion. The Baylor Lady Bears came out with a thrilling 82-81 win over Notre Dame in Tampa, Florida, to claim their third collegiate title. Brittney Griner, who carried Baylor to its last such triumph in 2012, took to Instagram to share in the joy of this year’s squad—and, perhaps, reminisce about the days before she became a champion and superstar in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury.
2) Klay Thompson Comes Full Circle for Oracle Arena Finale
Klay Thompson can’t seem to shake LA—and not just because his father, Mychal, won two titles with the Lakers and now serves as the team’s color commentator on radio. The Golden State Warriors’ All-Star noted that his first and last regular-season games at Oracle Arena, which is set to close after this year's campaign, came against the Los Angeles Clippers. And with the way the Western Conference standings are shaping up, with the Clippers slipping to eighth place and the Warriors on top, Klay may not be done with the City of Angels at Oracle just yet.
1) LeBron James Shares Sick SLAM Mashup for Nipsey Hussle
LeBron James stayed saluting Nipsey Hussle this past week. From sharing Baron Davis’ thoughts on the rapper’s passing to shouting out Russell Westbrook’s historic homage to Nipsey’s Rollin 60's Neighborhood Crips affiliation, the Lakers star has kept the love and appreciation flowing. In his latest such honorific, Bron reposted a clip from SLAM juxtaposing his own highlights to those of his eldest son, Bronny—set, of course, to the music of the late Ermias Asghedom.
